Environment America Research and Policy Center Staff
Margie Alt is the director of Environment America Research & Policy Center. She oversees all aspects of the organization, including strategy development for major campaigns; building the organization; and recruiting and training staff and activists.
Before taking on her current role, Margie served as the executive director of the Center for Public Interest Research, leading efforts to build effective and self-sufficient state PIRG organizations and run successful public interest programs across the country. In that role, she assisted state directors and advocates around the country in strengthening their programs, building their membership base, and becoming financially independent. She has recruited, trained, and overseen numerous staff and conducted hundreds of training sessions on topics ranging from running meetings and raising funds to developing campaigns and building and activating members.
Early in her career, Margie successfully directed MASSPIRG's statewide campaign to establish the nation's first Toxics Use Reduction Law in 1989. Over the years she also served as national field director for U.S. PIRG, campus organizing director for MASSPIRG and citizen outreach director for Florida PIRG. A graduate of Yale College, Margie lives in Somerville Massachusetts.
